Talk to an Education Advocate

DREDF is the PTI for Alameda, Contra Costa, and Yolo counties in Northern California. Our parent advocates provide technical assistance to parents in order to help guide them through the special education process. If you live in these counties and have a child with a disability (0-26 years) or suspect your child may have an undiagnosed disability, you can call a parent advocate at DREDF for assistance:

NEW DAY! IEP CLINIC – Third Tuesday of Every Month

DREDF holds a free Individual Education Program (IEP) clinic once a month for parents who want help strategizing and preparing for an upcoming IEP meeting. Please note that there are two prerequisites to fulfill before you can participate in an IEP Clinic:

1. You must have attended a basic special education workshop. We offer training on the second Monday of the month. Please call (510-644-2555) or email Tyler Zoanni (tzoanni@dredf.org) to reserve a spot.

2. You must speak with an education advocate by phone. Call 510-644-2555 ext. 227 and ask to speak with an education advocate.

NEW! A workshop on special education - Second Monday of the Month

"Understanding Special Education" is an overview of the special education process, Section 504 and IDEA laws.

Public Transit: Our offices are located at Allston Way and Sixth Street in Berkeley.
AC Transit Line 19 stops at Allston Way and Sixth Street. The last stop of the evening toward Emeryville and Oakland is about 9:25 pm; northbound to the North Berkeley BART station stops running about 10:00 pm. Line 51 stops three blocks away at University Avenue and Sixth Street and runs through the evening until 12:30 am.

 

6.24.09 Planning for Transition: Supporting Foster Youth with Disabilities in College

California College Pathways is hosting a free web seminar on Wednesday, June 24th from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. to inform child welfare professionals, educators in both K-12 and higher education, advocates and caregivers on the challenges foster youth with disabilities face as they transition into college. The web seminar will provide participants with resources and recommendations on how they can assist their foster youth in accessing services in college.  Panelists will include a representative from Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF) and leading experts in the field of disability services in higher education.
